A Man's Quest For An Air Conditioner

Area. And, in fact, there is nothing like a new air conditioner to beat the heat in the Bay Area. You try to buy one. I did.

Vanessa Bouslog is very willing but unable to sell air conditioners at the Best Buy in Pleasant Hill. Saturday was nuts.

"I'd say we had 90 phone calls for them, literally, from the moment I walked into the door until we closed," she said. "That wasn't counting the people who walked in."

I tried Sears, Fry's, Wal-Mart, and Home Depot.

Nathan Motzko tried three other big-box stores. He needs help.

"We've actually moved the mattress next to the air conditioner, so we sleep next to the air conditioner," Motzko said. "But I'm still hoping to get a fan to blow it across the room, cause it's still too hot."

People are desperate.

Tom Morganstern went to a hotel, and the air conditioner there wasn't working.

"So I was going to buy one to cool that room because they were having problems," Morganstern said. "It was that hot."

Air conditioner sales are also sizzling on Craigslist. There were 49 different offers, ranging from a $99 swamp cooler, to $800 for one of the big BTU boys. But there's a big controversy as well.

People are being warned that there's a lot scamming going on Craigslist -- double and triple the price, totally ripping people off, so you're warned to be careful.

Even electric fans are at a premium.

Deborah Sharman found nothing but empty shelves until she went to the Lafayette Ace Hardware. They have them for now, and they expect business even hotcake salesmen would envy.

Ok so i bought this b/c my condo doesnt allow me to put a window unit. I bought it b/c its a high end product of royal s. When i got the ac it was bulkier than I expected but it looked elegant so i was like ok not bad. Setup was very easy with the instructions. After that is was all downhill. I turned the unit on and its crazy loud!! it sounds like a plane in my bedroom. All ac's make noise but the window unit with them being in the window some of the noise goes outside and its minimal. But this thing was just too loud. Problem #2 is the vent located on the top of the ac unit, the airflow only goes upwards vertically even if you adjust the louvers so if you want some cold air to hit you you have to lean on top of the unit. After this i was still trying to make it look like a good buy to my wife which kept resenting me for buying it. problem #3 the blue light stays on no matter what and lights up the whole room in the night so bright that you cant sleep and you have to cover it. Problem #4 the unit does not get the room cold. I left it on the entire night on Hi full blast and the unit just got the room(240 sq ft) a little cool from 78 to 74. My frigidaire window ac got my room ice cold in 20 mins so bad that i would have to turn it off!!..all in all this ac is not a good as a sole cooling system, maybe it can be a supplemental cooling system if you have central air. From what i researched portable air conditioners will never be as powerful as window units. So im returning this garbage to samsclub and putting up my frigidaire in the nights when my condo board cant see it!!!
